The marvelous scenery of the Lake District has for a long time attracted famous literary personalities: -  William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin being but three.  The poet William Wordsworth lived at  Dove Cottage, now a museum testifying to his life and works. Here Wordsworth wrote many of his most famous poems.  One of the most important themes in his poetry was to show the link between human experience and the natural world. Wordsworth loved the Lake District and drew inspiration from its landscape.

The author of the famous Peter Rabbit stories, Beatrix Potter, lived near Ambleside at Hill Top. She had always been fascinated by 'real' animals (as well as the fantasy ones that appeared in her childrens' stories), and after her marriage to William Heelis she settled in the Lake District permanently, devoting herself almost entirely to farming.
Beatrix took an active role in caring for her Lake District farms. She helped with  hay making, unblocked drains, and searched the fells for lost sheep.

John Ruskin made his first visit to Coniston  was when he was just 5 years old - and the area made a huge impression on him. In 1830 when Ruskin was just 11 years old, he stayed for a month in the Lake District and began writing poetry. In 1871 he purchased the run-down Brantwood, because of its excellent views. Ruskin moved into the house and began the renovations. He also purchased some of the land surrounding the house. He lived there until he died in 1900 at the age of 80.
